Scientific Notebook

Some of the math and science courses UW Colleges Online offers require the use of Scientific Notebook from MacKichan Software. The course description will indicate if this software is required.

Downloading and burning the software to CD

To use Scientific Notebook you will need to download the software and burn it to a CD. If you do not have a CD burner or a high-speed Internet connection please skip this step and fill out the form at the bottom of the page to request that a CD be mailed to you.

Burning an ISO file to a CD - Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or 3 only)

  1. Download the freeware application ISORecorder or and the scientificnotebook.iso files and save them both to your desktop. If necessary you can right-click on the ISORecorder and the scientificnotebook.iso links and choose "Save as" and then browse to your desktop. Please note - The scientificnotebook.iso file is very large (~650 MB) and may take some time to download. If you do not have a high-speed Internet connection capable of downloading large files please fill out the form at the bottom of the page to have a CD mailed to you.
  2. Install the ISORecorder program by double-clicking on the ISORecorder.msi file. Accept all of the prompts as given.
  3. Insert a blank CD into your computer.
  4. Right-click on the scientificnotebook.iso file you downloaded and choose the option from the pop-up menu that reads "Copy image to CD".
  5. Follow the steps in the ISO Recorder wizard to burn the ISO file to the CD.
  6. Once the CD is burned you may exit the ISO Recorder program and follow the installation instructions. When completing the registration of Scientific Notebook, you must use your UW Colleges email account to receive a valid license.

Burning an ISO file to a CD - Windows Vista

  1. Determine whether or not your computer is running a 32-bit or 64 bit version of Windows Vista. To find out which version you are using do the following steps:
    1. Open System by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
    2. Under System, you can view the system type.
  2. Download the freeware application ISORecorder (for 32-bit versions of Windows Vista) or ISORecorder (for 64-bit versions of Windows Vista) and the scientificnotebook.iso files and save them both to your desktop. If necessary you can right-click on the ISORecorder and the scientificnotebook.iso links and choose "Save as" and then browse to your desktop.   4. Once the CD is burned follow the installation instructions. When completing the registration of Scientific Notebook, you must use your UW Colleges email account to receive a valid license.
