Adjusting to Online Learning

Taking courses online can be an adjustment when you have grown up learning in a classroom. Online learning provides flexibility and autonomy, so being a self-starter and having discipline can be an asset. Not going to a classroom multiple times a week can make it easy to fall behind and or put off work, but with these tips you can stay on track and excel in your virtual class.

Challenge: Procrastination

Challenge: Procrastination

Don’t let deadlines slip in your online courses. Unlike in the traditional classroom, students are largely independent in their learning schedule. The solution? Use a planner. Whether you are old school and use a paper one or keep track of things on your phone, it is important to write everything down. Actually seeing what you need to accomplish will keep you from racking your brain and help you stay organized.

Challenge: Motivation and discipline

Challenge: Motivation and discipline

Just because you don’t have to be on campus for an 8 a.m. class, does not mean you don’t have other obligations. Juggling school, work and family, it can be a challenge to find motivation to sit down and study.  Creating a study schedule and a reward system for yourself, can help. Take time to take a break or engage in your favorite activity during the week.

Challenge: Communication

Challenge: Communication

Though online classes require independence, you’re not in this alone. Your professors expect you to ask questions when you’re confused about class content or assignments. Online classes have discussion forums for students to connect with peers. Use your resources to get the most out of your course.

Challenge: Being social

Challenge: Being social

Online courses may make it difficult to be social at times. Get out into your community to meet new people. Take your laptop to a local coffee shop instead of your living room or home office. That’s what makes online learning so great, you can learn on your time and still connect with your community.
