College 101: Preparing for Fall Semester

There's nothing quite like the start of a new semester. Many students just like you feel a mixture of nerves and excitement as they look forward to interesting classes and getting one step closer to a degree

Whether you're a new student at UW Colleges Online, returning for another semester or getting back into school after some time away, you can set yourself up for success this semester. Check the following items off this list to ensure you're ready.

1. Finalize your enrollment

You can't expect to be successful in college if you're not sure what classes you're taking! Time is running out to enroll for fall. Accepted new students should get in touch with an advisor to make sure you're signed up for the right classes. Returning students can enroll through PRISM.

2. Get all your class materials

It's hard to succeed in a new semester if you don't have all the tools. Make sure you leave plenty of time to order your textbooks and obtain your class resources. Make sure to look into getting any extra supplies, software or applications you might need for a specific class.

3. Get familiar with UW Colleges Online learning platforms

Learning online is a little different than sitting in a traditional classroom. UW Colleges Online uses a platform called Desire2Learn Brightspace as a platform for online learning. Before the semester starts, take some time to get comfortable using D2L Brightspace so you can hit the ground running!

4. Put together a learning schedule

With school, work and other responsibilities, our students are busy. You can prepare for success this semester by figuring out where your schooling will fit into your life. Plan to set aside time each day to view lectures, complete assignments, take part in discussions and study. Figuring out a schedule that works for you can go a long way toward having a successful semester.

5. Set SMART goals

Setting goals is an important factor in having a successful semester. When you set your goals, follow the SMART formula: specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused and time-bound. It's far easier to achieve your goals when you know what they are, so take some time to think of what you want to accomplish this semester!

Starting a new semester can be exciting, nerve-wracking and everything in between. By following the tips on this list, you can calm some of those nerves and prepare yourself for a successful term. What are you waiting for? Apply today!
