Staff Profile: Emily Brooks

UW Colleges Online serves hundreds of students, which means there are plenty of people behind the scenes serving students. Instructional Designers work with professors to develop engaging and informative materials to supplement our online courses. Emily Brooks shared her experiences with us, and gives some advice for our students.

Why did you decide to become an Instructional Designer?

It was a bit of a fluke, but I gave it a shot because the graduate program seemed interesting. It was a nice blend of education, training and instruction. I've worked in higher education for 6 years now, and I’ve come to love working in instructional design!

What do you like best about your position at UW Colleges Online?

I like the creative aspect of it and that I get to work with instructors on classes to engage our students. Plus, I get to play with a lot of the artistic design as well. I also love the work environment. The people here are one of the best things about UW Colleges Online.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to students thinking about taking an online class?

It's not a face-to-face class! Seems weird to say, but the structure of an online class is VERY different compared to a face-to-face class. You may have to pop in throughout the week to engage in discussions, turn in assignments or read articles. Be prepared to be self paced and read the syllabus!

How can students be successful in an online class?

Be engaged. When you get a chance to work with your classmates, do it! It can be somewhat lonely being online, so getting a nice network of people in your same boat is a great way to deal with the stress. Ask questions if you don’t understand, but take the time to see if you can figure out yourself. Lastly, take advantage of the due date windows that the instructor provides and try to turn things in earlier, rather than later. Things can tend to build up!

What might people be surprised to learn about you?

I love playing my flute at my church, relaxing at home with my pup and my twin brother was on Jeopardy!
