Technology Requirements for UW Colleges Online Courses

Most UW Colleges Online courses are conducted in the Desire2Learn Brightspace system and require that the student have access to specific programs and technologies. While most required programs are free for download, other software must be purchased. In order to facilitate students’ access to these programs, the UW System offers drastically discounted software through the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog (WISC).

Below please find the technology requirements to attend UW Colleges Online courses:

Software and Hardware

  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Adobe Flash Player
  • PDF Reader
  • Apple QuickTime Player OR Windows Media Player
  • Access to a printer
  • Access to a scanner
  • Webcam

Microsoft Office 365 is provided to UW Colleges Online students free of charge.

Operating Systems & Network

Operating Systems

  • For PC users, Windows 7 or higher
  • For Mac users, recent version of OS X


  • Reliable Internet access
  • Broadband 1.5 mbps or higher (courses include media-rich content, such as streaming audio and video)

Browser Options & Plug-Ins

Microsoft Internet Explorer (and Edge) are not supported.

Mobile Usage

Only certain features, such as browsing content, are optimized for mobile browsing. Quizzes and Dropbox submissions should only be completed using a desktop computer.
